Tie Care Information

A bow tie is an investment in your wardrobe, so you need to be sure to take care of them appropriately.

  • When finished wearing a bow tie, hang it on a tie rack or drape it around the collar of a coat. This will allow gravity to smooth out the wrinkles.

  • If the wrinkles do not disappear, steam is a good second option. If you are using a steam iron, be sure that the iron does not touch the tie.

  • If your bow tie becomes stained, use a clean cloth and seltzer water to blot water-soluble stains. If the stain is oil-based, try using talcum powder.

  • Commercial stain removers are another option, but be sure to test the product on a part of the tie that will not be visible when worn. Another option would be to take it to the dry cleaners, but be aware that the chemicals and cleaning process could damage or destroy the fabric.

  • When traveling, try to use a tie case. This is the best insurance for a clean, wrinkle-free tie. If you do not have a tie case, roll the ties before you pack them in your luggage. Upon arrival, promptly unroll and hang them up to avoid wrinkles or creases.
